Reinventing Your Motivation

Why do we do what we do? Are we more so the choices we make or the motivation behind our choices?

In an age where we are able to see what all of our friends are doing, and how great their lives are, it’s important to ask ourselves why we are striving towards a goal. It’s easy to want to improve our lives to compete or to maintain an image, but does that approach actually lead to satisfaction? No. There will always be people who are traveling more than we are or having a more “fulfilling” life than what we might be living. Social media really amplifies this reality. With this being the case, how can we really learn to be happy with where we are at while not being complacent.

I believe that competition can be healthy, but it can also be unhealthy. If you are competing in everything and against everyone happiness will not come. Happiness comes through having good motivations behind achieving success or pursuing goals; this comes from finding the right competition.

I say compete against yourself and your assumptions. Work to challenge your way of thinking and expand your self concept. Seeing what others are doing is a great way to motivate yourself to challenge your perspective on what you can accomplish, BUT with that said just because you are not doing what everyone else is doing does not mean that you are doing something wrong.

What is important is to figure out what your dreams are and to pursue them. Once you start worrying about yourself and taking your focus off of what others are doing joy will come.
